What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated as: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). It is a quick screening tool — not a diagnostic measure. Athletes may have elevated BMI due to muscle mass; the number alone does not distinguish fat from muscle.
| BMI range | WHO category | Asian/Indian cut-off |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Same |
| 18.5 – 22.9 | Normal weight | Normal (18.5–22.9) |
| 23.0 – 24.9 | Overweight (starts at 25) | Overweight (23–27.4) |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Obese (≥27.5) |
| 30.0 – 34.9 | Obese Class I | Obese Class I |
| 35 – 39.9 | Obese Class II | Obese Class II |
| ≥ 40 | Obese Class III | Obese Class III |
For South Asian populations, health risks (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease) emerge at lower BMI values. The WHO Asia-Pacific guidelines recommend using 23 as the overweight threshold and 27.5 as the obesity threshold for Indians.
